Daniel Joiner
What is the work you are representing as a member of the committee?
I am the Chief Diversity Officer at UnityPoint Health.
How does your work contribute to the mental health support balance in the Black community in Iowa?
As an organization that provides Behavioral Health services, it's important that we support members of our community by meeting them where they are, and educating our teams on the cultural challenges and stigmas associated with seeking care. It's critical that we do our part to engage with the community outside the walls of our hospitals and our clinics, and remain a trusted partner in our community for healthcare services.
Why did you choose to say yes to this committee?
It connects deeply to my personal values as well as my professional values. I have experienced first hand how mental health and substance use can impact the family, friends and a community. Whether you're young, old, rich or poor, these challenges do not discriminate. It's important to me to lend my voice to an organization and a cause that's raising awareness to destigmatize mental health in our communities and it's been an honor to serve on the Make It OK Back the Black committee.
