What is a Produce Prescription Program?
Produce prescription programs aim to increase the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables and can help improve diet-related health conditions. In Iowa, this program allows medical providers at a participating clinic to "prescribe" fruits and vegetables to their patients* in the form of monthly nutrition education and financial incentives to buy fresh produce.
How does it work for Iowans?
Download the App!
After enrolling in the program, you will receive a link to download the Iowa Fresh smartphone app. Once downloaded onto your phone, you will watch a short introduction video to get familiar with the app and the program.
Learn and Earn!
Watch a brief video and answer a 4-5 question quiz to earn your monthly Produce Prescription. You will receive $30 per month for you and each household member to spend on produce. These will automatically be added to the virtual wallet in your Fresh Iowa app after completing the monthly education module.
Spend!
Spend your digital Prescription dollars on fresh fruits and vegetables at participating grocery stores. Make sure you let the cashier know you will be spending your Produce Prescription during checkout. Show the cashier the barcode in your virtual wallet to scan for payment. The cashier will confirm how much of your prescription you’d like to spend. There are no spending limits, just be aware of the existing balance in your wallet. Produce Prescriptions expire 30 days after they are loaded in your wallet.
*To participate, individuals must be referred into the program by their doctor and must meet eligibility requirements

Logging in
Navigating the MyFeed home page
Viewing your MyEducation videos
Click on the MyEducation icon at the bottom center of the screen. This is where you will watch a video and take a quick survey once a month to earn your prescription.
There may be more than one education video available at once. Remember, only submit the video survey if you are ready to earn for the month. Prescriptions expire after 30 days. Check back around the same time next month to learn & earn again!
When you log in, you will be brought to the MyFeed home page. Here you can scroll through program announcements, reminders, and resources.
From this screen, click the MyEducation icon or MyLocation icon at the bottom of the screen to navigate to your educational videos or to see store locations.
Accessing your Virtual Wallet
Click on the upper right corner of the virtual Produce Prescription card at the top of the screen. This will bring you to your Virtual Wallet.
Here, you can see your prescription balance and a barcode to present to the cashier to spend your prescription.
Click on the icons above the barcode to navigate to other pages:
The folding map icon will show participating store locations near you.
The receipt icon will show your transaction history. This is a good spot to check the date on which you earned prescription dollars (they expire 30 days after this date).
The bell icon will show you the same news feed as the MyFeed home page.
Click on the MyLocations icon at the bottom of the home screen. This will bring you to a map marked with participating store locations. Bring the store up in your phone’s navigation app by clicking the green arrow to the left of the store name.
See above to access this map from your virtual wallet, or see store listings at the bottom of this page.
Where to spend
After you’ve done your shopping, let your cashier know that you will be using your Produce Prescription during checkout.
Open up the Virtual Wallet in your Iowa Fresh app. Show the barcode on your phone to the cashier. They will scan the barcode and ask how much of your prescription you’d like to spend.
The cashier will be able to see the total cost of the fresh fruits and vegetables you purchased. So, if you don’t have a specific amount you’d like to spend, they can take off the maximum amount.
Be aware of your prescription balance as you won’t be able to spend over that amount.
