The Iowa Healthiest State Initiative Receives Grant from Variety - the Children’s Charity

The Iowa Healthiest State Initiative has received a grant from Variety - the Children’s Charity, to fund the Produce Prescription Program for pediatric patients in Polk County.

The Iowa Healthiest State Initiative is a nonprofit organization serving the state of Iowa with programs that work to create awareness and integrate solutions to improve the physical, social, and mental well-being of Iowans.

The Variety grant will be used to provide a “food is medicine” intervention in the form of monthly fresh fruit and vegetable “prescription” vouchers for low-income children and families living with, or at high risk of, diet-related disease. The Produce Prescription Program is done in partnership with Broadlawns Medical Center and Primary Health Care. The program was created to improve affordability and accessibility to healthy food in an effort to address childhood obesity and nutrition insecurity.

“Variety’s support will be instrumental in our efforts to scale and expand the Produce Prescription program,” said Jami Haberl, executive director of the Iowa Healthiest State Initiative. “We estimate that Variety’s grant will contribute to over 20,000 servings of fresh produce for disadvantaged central Iowans.”
